Location: Infirmary Quarantine
Timeline: 36 hours after arrival
Any time now. Any time now. Any. Time. Now.
Those words kept rolling through Kim’s head, unable to stop checking the clock every few minutes. A watched pot never boils, and a watched clock slows down time. They were closing in on thirty-six long, excruciating hours in quarantine since they’d arrived back from the planet. She’d long since given up sleeping to pass the time. Only nightmares of death plagued her dreams, causing her to thrash awake in a cold sweat. Exhaustive sleep she had managed, but that had only lasted a few hours out of the many she’d endured. And vomit. If she hadn’t had been shot and Maddy had to save her and her unborn child, she would have been taking a pregnancy test by yesterday, when the nausea set in.
Her TV droned on, she’d lost interest in whatever program had been on hours ago, yet the background noise was comforting. She kept staring at her laptop, the words blurring together into a mass of illegible mess, her mind elsewhere. Like how to tell Kevin. She didn’t want to just blurt it out. This was too big of a deal. But she was too tired and overwhelmed to think of anything better. An e-mail ping snapped her back to reality, the subject line catching her eye. Labs were done!
Opening the e-mail, she scanned through the report, opening the data to get a better look for herself at the results of the cultures. While the virus itself was still unknown, it seemed to have been created to attack a specific DNA make up, and it wasn’t humanoid. While that was something of interest, she filed it away to research at another time. The key note though was they weren’t infected, they weren’t contagious. They were free.
As if on cue, she saw her staff appear at her door to the quarantine room without their hazmat suits on, opening it after a moment. “Doctor Spears, you all have been cleared to be released.” Dr. Jefferson said with a grin as he entered her room. “An e-mail has been sent to you detailing the results of the cultures.”
Kim nodded as she shut down her laptop, anxious as hell to get out of there. “I got it. Thank you. I’ll take a closer look at the modifications later, after I’ve gotten some rest at home.” She said as she quickly packed up her computer to drop off at her office on her way out of the mountain.
“Yes Ma’am.” He nodded, watching her quickly pack up, before sidestepping out of her way barely in time as she scooted out the door. She was obviously in a rush to get out of there, and he really hated to burst her bubble. “But umm…Doctor Spears…” He hesitated as her pace slowed and she looked over her shoulder at him, the regret of hearing him obvious in her eyes. “The Admiral want to meet with you about the mission and the findings.”
Her shoulders dropping, Kim let out an audible sigh. So close. “Thank you, Jefferson. I’ll go take care of that.”
