Cpl. Inola MacKenna

ON:
Jordon had just finished packing when there was a knock on his door. The door opened and one of the med techs stepped in. “Sir, I was asked to deliver these too you.” He said handing the Colonel a clip board and a few folders. “Thank you, Sergeant Barns.” He said glancing at the stripes and name tape. He skimmed the clipboard, it was the results of the intake physicals of his latest batch of SDS personnel. At least what he needed to know. Basically, a list of pass and fails, he was happy to see there were no fails. He noticed the Sergeant was still there, “The Air Force doesn’t really pay you guys with tips does it?” he said jokingly. The Sergeant smiled, “No Sir, though if you wanted to give me one, I wouldn’t turn it down.” He smiled, and seemed to relax a bit, “Actually, I wanted to let you know that Cpl. MacKenna has been moved out of quarantine, you can visit her now if you want.” Jordon tossed the clipboard and files on his desk and headed for medical thanking the Sergeant on his way by.
-
Inola woke up slowly. Her head felt like someone had dropped a Mack truck on it, and her memory was a bit fuzzy. “What happened?” she said opening her eye’s and deciding that was a mistake. A voice near her grew louder as it approached, but was gentle, and decidedly female. “We’re still working that out, but suffice it to say, you’ve had a hell of a mission.”
-
Jordon smiled over hearing the conversation as he entered the small room. “That’s putting it mildly, Doctor.” He said as he approached. “You’ve got a mean left hook Corporal.” He said leaning against the other bed. “He glanced towards the doctor who was eyeing him. “I’m sorry, I was told I could visit, if you need me to leave.” He said starting to stand up.
-
The Doctor shook her head, “No, it’s fine.” She said smiling, “Just don’t stay too long, she needs some rest.” Inola nodded slowly, “I don’t think she’s wrong there.” She said risking opening her eyes again. She noticed the Colonel was favoring one side and had just a hint of a bruise on his neck. “you look like hell, Sir.”
-
Jordon laughed, “You’re lucky I took it easy on you.” He said with a smile.
-
“What happened?” she asked curiosity over coming her headache for the moment.
-
Jordon thought about it, “Well… I could not stay long… or I could tell you about it, not sure I can do both.” He said with a smile, “Tell you what, I’m heading home for a couple days, we’ll have coffee when I get back, and I’ll tell you all about it.”
-
Inola thought about this for a moment, then decided that was acceptable, as she could barely keep her eyes open. “Ok. Have fun at home.” She said wondering if she’d be out of here soon enough to do something.
-
Jordon gently laid his hand on her shoulder, “Glad you’re going to be ok. I’d have hated to have to train a replacement.”
-
Inola gave him the finger “Figures.”
-
Jordon laughed, and left her to rest.
